In old-fashioned country fairs, there were a variety of contests such as the "three-legged race." Two people would partner up, and the right leg of one and the left leg of the other would be tied together. The pair would then have to race to the finish line without falling down to beat out the other participants. The team that wins usually figures out quickly how to compromise, find the proper balance, and anticipate the rhythm of the other person.
